Helping kids get in touch with nature

Aspiring park rangers between the ages of 8 and 13 can sign up for the Junior Ranger Hikers program at Maudslay State Park.

The free program starts Friday, July 5, and will be held every Thursday and Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. until the end of the month.

Children will learn about various aspects of the park, explore different trails and learn how to navigate with a compass.

A new segment this year, Junior Ranger Stewards, gives participants the opportunity to improve the park. Activities include assembling a bluebird house, building a turtle barge and planting flowers.

Sessions meet at the park headquarters, 74 Curzon Mill Road, Newburyport. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

To register, call 978-465-7223.
