Police seek alleged gunman in South Hampton

SOUTH HAMPTON — Following an hours-long search, New Hampshire police captured a man believed to be armed and dangerous in an area they had encircled in South Hampton tonight at about 9 p.m.

The capture came after a dramatic search by local and state police that unfolded about 6 p.m..

A massive wave of New Hampshire police officers and tactical units established a perimeter around a large swath of land in South Hampton about a half-mile from the Amesbury border as they searched for a reportedly armed and disturbed man, identified as Anthony Reardon, 44. His latest address is unknown.

According to reports, Reardon had an altercation with N.H. police earlier in the evening. He was last seen in the South Hampton area walking toward Amesbury, according to the Mass. State Police.

Amesbury police said Reardon was thought to be armed with a rifle and wearing a Kevlar vest. Officers were placed on alert and deployed on roads leading into Amesbury; however, Reardon never made it into that city.

During the extensive search, the area of Route 150 and Route 107A, which had been shut down along with Highland Road, remained closed.

Amesbury police issued a shelter-in-place for residents of the area, warning them to remain indoors, and roadblocks were set up across the area. Kensington police also sent out text alerts asking residents to stay inside and lock their doors until further notice. The warnings were lifted upon Reardon’s arrest.

Unconfirmed reports said Reardon may have armed himself with weapons found in a police cruiser he allegedly stole. In the minutes before the massive search, police in Kensington, N.H., were alerted to shots fired behind the town’s Town Hall. It has yet to be confirmed whether the two incidents are related.

Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio said Massachusetts has moved personnel to Amesbury, and area and officers are authorized to assist New Hampshire state police if needed.

Procopio said last night that there had been no reports of injuries.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
