Newburyport issues emergency actions for snowstorm

Newburyport — Mayor Donna Holaday, in conjunction with Newburyport Department of Public Services and Emergency Management has declared a snow emergency for the City of Newburyport beginning at 6 p.m. today until 6 p.m. on Thursday. The blue notification lights will be illuminated at noon today. 

Please read the following emergency notifications from other City Departments:

Department of Public Services: Please see the city's website for additional snow plowing procedures and permitted parking areas.

Recycling & Solid Waste Disposal: There will be no curbside trash and recycling pick up on Wednesday. Wednesday pick up will be on Thursday and for the remainder for the week, trash and recycling will be delayed by one day. Friday pick up will be on Saturday. Crow Lane Recycling Center: The Recycling Center will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 5 for the monthly drop off and will be opened next Saturday, March 5 from 8 a.m. - noon. For more information please contact Molly Ettenborough at 978-499-0413.

Health Department: The Health Department is reminding all city residents and businesses to adhere to the Newburyport City Ordinance 12-52 and make every effort to clear sidewalks, handicap accessibility ramps. For more information please contact the Health Department at 978-465-4410.

Fire Department: The Fire Department is asking residents for assistance with shoveling out fire hydrants in front or adjacent to their properties. Chief Stephen Cutter has asked that it is particularly important to clear the portion of the hydrant that faces the street. This will greatly enhance the Department's ability to access water in the event of a fire emergency.

Building Department: The department has issued a Snow Load Alert, which has been posted on the city website and The Daily News website.

Building Commissioner Gary Calderwood is asking residents to review the recommended guidelines for removing snow from roofs. This is especially important during heavy snow conditions as forecasted for the upcoming storm.
