In wake of West Nile and EEE, Newburyport plans to spray for mosquitoes Monday

NEWBURYPORT -- The city's Health Department has announced it will conduct citywide mosquito spraying Monday night, an attempt to protect residents from two potentially deadly mosquito-borne illnesses.

The city will begin spraying an "ultralow volume aerosol ground application" starting at 7 p.m. Monday, and finishing up by 2 a.m. Tuesday. It will be conducted by the regional mosquito control bureau.

The spraying was encouraged by the discovery of a mosquito pool in Newburyport that tested positive for West Nile Virus, as well as the discovery of pools that tested positive for West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Amesbury, Boxford, Groveland, Newbury, Topsfield and Ipswich.

This spraying is part of the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control procedures, which have been used in Newburyport in past years. The purpose of the adulticide application is to control virus carrying adult mosquitoes. The pesticide being used is called Duet, and is applied in ultra-low volume sprayers at a rate of approximately 0.42 ounce per acre of finished spray. Duet is a compound similar to ANVIL, the adulticide used in previous years for mosquito control ground spraying.

Homeowners who do not want their property sprayed should contact the City Health Department at 978-465-4410 and include the homeowner’s name, address and telephone number.

Newburyport residents who have additional questions and concerns can call Robert F. Bracey, Director of Public Health, City of Newburyport Health Department at 978-465-4410 or Jack Card, Northeast Management Mosquito Control at 978-463-6630.
