Evacuation order issued for Salisbury Beach

Officials seek to protect residents in advance of storm

SALISBURY — With an impending coastal storm ready to bear down on the Northeast, a mandatory evacuation for all oceanfront properties on Salisbury Beach has been issued beginning tonight through Friday evening, according to Emergency Management Director Bob Cook.

Properties subject to the evacuation are in the areas of North End Boulevard — especially in the 400 block — and along Atlantic and Central avenues.

A Code Red evacuation alert will go out beach-wide to residents tonight at 6.

Salisbury, with the assistance of the Red Cross, is opening an emergency shelter for affected residents beginning at 8 tonight at the Hilton Senior Center on Route 1 next to the fire station.

The shelter will be open during the time of mandatory evacuation. Cook said residents are advised to bring with them to the shelter whatever they may need to be comfortable, Cook said.

Officials took action in light of the weather forecast, which indicate this storm could cause more coastal flooding and damage than in previous storms recently. Thirty-foot waves are possible, Cook said, and that's on top of projected storm surges.

No evacuation has been ordered yet on Plum Island. Newbury Selectman Joe Story said Plum Island residents will be notified by a broadcast phone alert should officials believe evacuation there is required.

The Daily News will be publishing a complete report on the approaching storm and public safety measures in Thursday's paper.
