NEWBURYPORT - After recently learning that one of Newburyport’s two remaining Superintendent candidates is being considered for the same job in the Manchester/Essex, the School Committee is preparing to make a final decision tonight on which one should lead Newburyport schools.
The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. in room #118 at Newburyport High, following site visits made this week to the communities of Dr. Marc Kerble, Assistant Superintendent of Winchester Public Schools, and Dr. Erin Nosek, Superintendent of North Brookfield Public Schools.
School Committee Chair Bruce Menin said a final screening of the candidates will take place tonight, along with a presentation of reports compiled by members who conducted the site visits. Then a decision will be made.
“We scheduled the meeting for tonight based on when we thought we would be ready to make some decisions,” said Menin, who added he didn’t foresee Kerble’s candidacy in Manchester/Essex affecting the outcome of the committee’s decision. Kerble is expected to interview as a Superintendent finalist in Manchester tomorrow, leading to questions about whether the outcome of tonight’s meeting will affect Kerble’s candidacy there. Manchester Essex has budgeted for its next Superintendent a pay range between $130,000 to $155,000, but had budgeted $175,000 for its retiring Superintendent who earned $169,983 last year.
When asked whether the two communities could get into a bidding war should they select Kerble, Menin said that was a question for the candidate.
“It’s possible the two communities could choose the same candidate, Menin said. “I would suspect that a possibility exists if we both end up identifying the same candidate but at this point you’d have to ask the candidate. We have two candidates we’re considering and if we end up picking the same candidate, then we’ll see.”
