NEWBURYPORT -- C. Bruce Brown, a former Newburyport city councilor and the father of Sen. Scott Brown, has died, the senator has announced. he was 75.
In a statement, Brown said his father died Thursday afternoon. Brown's father had been battling Parkinson's disease for many years, the senator said. Over the past year, he had been either hospitalized or in an assisted living facility.
C. Bruce Brown had lived on Plum Island for decades, and represented the island in the City Council for five terms, from 1992 to 2001. He served as council president for a few months in 1997.
Scott Brown spent portions of the summer on Plum Island ith his father.
"Growing up, my relationship with my Dad was a complicated one," Brown said in a statement. "As we have both matured, our relationship, respect and love for each other also matured. He was a good man with a big heart. Gail, Ayla and Arianna and I are thankful for his wife, Peggy, her family and their unwavering love for him during his final days. I will miss his guidance and sense of humor."
