SALISBURY — Emergency management officials are once again strongly urging Salisbury Beach residents to leave the beach area prior to the oncoming high tides tonight and tomorrow morning due to the expectation of coastal flooding from the storm.
"(Friday morning's) tide especially isn't looking good," Salisbury Emergency Management Director Bob Cook said. "The high tide is definitely expected to cause flooding at the beach."
The National Weather Service is forecasting minor to moderate coastal flooding and severe beach erosion will occur during tonight's high tide at 8:18 p.m. and tomorrow morning's high tide at 8:37 a.m.
Cook said flooding can begin occurring two hours before high tide, making roads impassable.
With the help of the Red Cross, the Hilton Center on Route 1 has been opened as an emergency shelter for those who leave their homes.
Motorists in areas that could flood are advised not to drive through standing water in the roadway, saying water is often higher than expected and can seriously damage vehicles.
