HAMPTON, N.H. — Search and rescue crews have recovered the body of a 12-year-old Lawrence girl missing since she went for a swim about 7:30 last night, family members have confirmed.
Nayelin Encarnacion, of 44 Berkeley St., had gone for a swim last night to cool off while visiting the beach with friends and family yesterday.
However, a riptide is believed to have taken her too far out. When she struggled to get back in, her brother, 20-year-old Walter Moldanado, also of Lawrence, swam out to save her.
He was saved by a Good Samaritan, but she went below the surface and could not be found, despite the best efforts of rescue crews from the Coast Guard and Hampton Beach looking for her throughout the night.
The search resumed at first-light today and she was recovered around 1 p.m., according to the Coast Guard.
Her body actually floated back into shore and was found by several beachgoers, who alerted rescue crews to the body.
She was taken from the scene on a Hampton Beach Patrol ATV.
