Mirra wins GOP primary for House seat

West Newbury's Lenny Mirra won the Republican primary for the 2nd Essex District seat, beating two opponents in Thursday's election.

Mirra gathered 1,331 votes. His closest competitor, Robert Cronin of Boxford, won 1,120 votes, and Gary Fowler of Georgetown won 501 votes. Mirra's campaign was pushed over the top by commanding wins in three of the district's communities, West Newbury, Merrimac, and Newbury. Cronin won his hometown handily, as did Fowler.

Mirra will face West Newbury Democrat Barry Fogel in the Nov. 6 general election. The winner will replace state Rep. Harriett Stanley, D-West Newbury, who is retirning at the end of the year.
