Accident shuts down Route 110 in Amesbury

AMESBURY —

AMESBURY — A one-car accident has shut down Route 110 (Macy Street) in Amesbury from the Interstate 495 onramp on Macy Street near Amesbury Plaza to the intersection of Main Street at Cumberland Farms and Amesbury House of Pizza.

The accident, which occurred at about 1:15 p.m., involved a dump truck carrying sand, which hit an utility pole, snapping it off and sending live, low-hanging wires down close to the ground.

Police say the driver, who was heading west on Route 110, apparently veered off the road and crashed head-on into the pole. The driver was transported to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport with what appeared to not be serious injuries, officials said.

Public safety officials expected the stretch of Route 110 to be closed for several hours as crews worked to cut power to the pole and then replace the pole. Power initially was out to only a couple homes in the area of 50 Macy St. But more outages may occur as the pole is replaced.

Traffic headed west on Route 110 was being diverted onto Interstate 495 south. Traffic headed east on Route 110 was being redirected onto Main Street either toward downtown or Point Shore along the Merrimack River.
