Third house succumbs on Plum Island

Demolition today for three Annapolis Way homes

PLUM ISLAND — A third Annapolis Way house succumbed overnight to rapidly worsening erosion conditions on Plum Island.

The Bresnahan house at 31 Annapolis Way toppled off its foundation early this morning. The house, previously deemed structurally unsafe and uninhabitable late last year, was unoccupied at the time.

Now, it as well as the houses at 37 and 41 Annapolis Way, belonging to the Nee and Bandoian families respectively, will be demolished in the coming hours.

Crews this morning were busy cutting all utility services to the affected houses and are beginning measures to remove the houses from the shorelines as the high tide recedes. Heavy equipment was in place to begin the demolition.

Police Chief Michael Reilly said the plan is to try to pull the houses back away from the beach and toward the roadway to minimize even more debris as well as the contents of the homes from washing into the still-raging seas that continued to batter houses along Annapolis Way.

Just after 10:30 a.m., people were seen entering the Nee house at 37 Annapolis Way to salvage whatever personal belongings they could.

Public safety officials are seeking to keep all curiosity-seekers away from the beach in the Annapolis Way area as the demolition is expected to continue throughout the day.

The severe damage on Plum Island follows a succession of powerful coastal storms this winter, including Superstorm Sandy in October and strong blizzards in December and again last month.

Officials continue to have concerns for other houses on Annapolis Way and nearby Fordham Way. We will be updating the conditions on Plum Island throughout the weekend.
