AMESBURY -- A serious auto accident temporarily shut down Interstate 495 North in Amesbury this afternoon.
According to scanner transmissions, at around 3 p.m. a car reportedly veered off the southbound lanes of the hifghway, across the median and into a northbound car. Up to six cars were involved in the ensuing collision.
Police temporarily shut down the highway, and cars were diverted into Merrimac. One lane was reopened; it's not clear when all lanes of the highway will reopen.
The accident occurred about a half mile south of the Route 150 intersection, in a relatively flat and straight section of the highway.
At least one very serious injury was witnessed by a Daily News staffer at the scene. Emergency responders have not yet issued detailed information on the accident.
