Snow emergency declared in Newburyport

NEWBURYPORT -- In anticipation of a winter snowstorm, a snow emergency/parking ban will be in effect from 10 p.m. tonight until 12 noon Thursday.

The city's blue lights emergency warning system will be turned on at 3 p.m. this afternoon.

As of 10 p.m., all vehicles must be off the streets. Vehicles that are not removed will be ticketed and towed.

The municipal lots are all open.

The latest forecasts are calling for 5 to 8 inches of snow in the Newburyport area, starting in the early morning hours Wednesday and continuing through the evening commute. Up to one inch of snow iper hour s expected to fall during the worst part of the storm, in the afternoon. By evening Wednesday, the storm is expected to switch over to sleet or freezing raing, making travel hazardous.
