Salisbury woman killed, two seriously injured in I-495 crash

Loose dog on highway may be to blame for accident

HAVERHILL -- A 68-year-old Salisbury woman was killed and two others in her car from Salisbury were seriously injured in a multi-car collision on Interstate 495 in Haverhill Saturday night that police said may have occurred as drivers swerved to avoid a loose dog.

Sandra Burrow, who was a passenger in the back seat of one of the cars, was pronounced dead at Lawrence General Hospital.

The driver, Beth Burrow, 39, of Salisbury, was transported by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital and then transferred to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston with serious injuries. Roderick Burrow Sr., 66, who was a passenger in the front seat, was flown by medical helicopter to Beth Israel, also with serious injuries. Their conditions were not known Sunday morning.

Police were not commenting on the relationship of the Burrows Sunday morning.

According to preliminary reports, the accident, which occurred about 6:10 p.m. near exit 50 by Route 97, involved at least two vehicles, police said. No other injuries were reported. Police did not release any information on the occupants of the other vehicles.

Police initially received reports the crash resulted when a motorist tried to avoid a loose dog on the highway. Initial reports said the dog was killed in the accident. Police said they would have no further information on the cause until they investigate further.

Interstate 495 was closed for about 45 minutes following the accident to allow the medical helicopter to land and police to conduct rescue operations. All lanes of the highway were reopened by 8:50 p.m.

The accident is under investigation by troopers from the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Newbury, Crime Scene Services and the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section. Troopers were assisted on scene by Haverhill Fire and Rescue.
