NEWBURYPORT -- The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for an extensive area of the Eastern seaboard, extending from Maine to Pennsylvania.
The tornado watch will be in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday. A tornado watch is issued to alert people that conditions are favorable for a tornado, but none have been sighted. A more severe level of threat is a tornado warning, which means a tornado has been sighted.
An enormous mass of unsettled air has been moving toward the northeast today, according to the National Weather Service. The local forecast calls for a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m.. Some storms could be severe, with hail, damaging winds, and frequent lightning.
In Newburyport today, a brief thundershower moved through at about 9 a.m., followed by unusually warm and humid weather, with gusty winds from the west.
