Porter new oncology navigator at Winchester Hospital

Kathleen Porter, RN, BS, of Newburyport was named to the new role of oncology navigator at Winchester Hospital. Oncology navigation is a specialized service offered to patients, families and caregivers to facilitate timely access to quality health and psychosocial care, from pre-diagnosis through all phases of the cancer experience. Research indicates that cancer patients who are assisted by nurse navigators report better compliance with treatment plans and an improved quality of life.

In her position, Porter will assist patients and their families by streamlining scheduling of appointments and procedures, providing education and referrals, and offering emotional support.

Porter has extensive experience in nurse navigation and oncology care. Most recently, she worked for 17 years at Eastern Connecticut Health Network in Manchester, Conn., where she was an intensive care unit nurse, cardiac rehabilitation nurse and manager, women's health coordinator and breast care coordinator.

She received her bachelor of science degree in health administration from Saint Joseph's College of Maine, and she received her associate degree in nursing from Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. Certified as a breast care nurse by the Oncology Nursing Society, Porter has worked closely with the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
