Port lawyer lauded for elder advocacy

Newburyport lawyer Margot Birke was recognized as Member of the Year by the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys for her commitment of time and energy as chairwoman of the group’s programming committee.

Birke was selected for the honor from among the chapter’s 500-plus members. She was among those honored at the chapter’s annual meeting for advocacy of elder services and commitment to raising awareness of legal issues affecting seniors.

Lagasse named to Regis College board

Ann M. Lagasse of Newburyport has been named to the board of trustees of Regis College in Weston. Lagasse, a 1979 graduate of Regis College, was co-founder and principal of Piper Properties Management Company in Newburyport for 20 years. She was responsible for purchasing, redeveloping and managing 35 historic mixed-use properties in the city, including retail, office, residential and commercial tenants. Currently, Lagasse is managing Boston’s Seaport marina projects and developing an inn and a mega yacht marina in Boston’s North End. She is the recipient of four annual Historic Preservation Awards for Commercial Buildings from the City of Newburyport and received the Women of Influence Award from the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce.

Lagasse said it was an honor to be elected to the board, “especially at this time when the college is undergoing a master plan, and I will have the opportunity to use my experience in property development to fulfill a major objective of the strategic plan.”

Lagasse is also active at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Anna Jaques Community Health Foundation, serving as chairwoman of the board since 2009. She earned her bachelor of arts in economics from Regis and her master in business administration from Northeastern University in Boston in 1988.
