Alert police officer saves 4-year-old

ASHTABULA, Ohio — A quick thinking police officer saved the life of a 4-year-old boy in this northwest Ohio city.

Officer Thomas Clemens Jr. was driving along Bunker Hill Road about 10:15 a.m. last Sunday, when he was waved down by the boy's frantic parents. The child was motionless and apparently choking, said Police Chief Robert Stell.

The officer began CPR until paramedics arrived. The child was taken to a Cleveland hospital, where Stell said he's listed in critical, but stable, condition.

“We were told the boy would not have made it without Officer Clemens’ efforts,” said Stell. “We are proud of him."

Clemens, 39, comes from a police family - his father and uncle worked for the Ashtabula department - and this isn't the first life he's saved. Three years ago he and Detective Jay Janek were recognized for saving a suicidal woman.

Details were reported by the Ashtabula, Ohio, Star Beacon.
