107-year-old Red Sox fan hoping for 1918 all over again

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Obeline Biron has been a Red Sox fan for almost 100 years.

One of her first vivid memories of the Red Sox is when they won the World Series in 1918.

"That's when I really became a fan. We all celebrated. It was a great time," the 107-year-old said. She was just 12 years old at the time.

If the Red Sox defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 or 7 at Fenway, it will be the first time they have won the World Series at home since 1918.

Biron said she has been a die-hard fan ever since then, through all the good, bad and the ugly.

"There was a long period where they didn’t win, but I was always a fan. I grew up with them," she said. "You could say a number and I would tell you the player’s name. I knew everyone for years. I can’t do that anymore."

When the Red Sox finally won in 2004 after 86 years of never being champions, Biron was elated.

"Oh, I was dancing around with everyone," she laughed. "It was amazing."

Biron has seen the Red Sox, Fenway Park and Major League Baseball change through the years.

She got to see the first African-American to be allowed into the major league, Jackie Robinson, play in person.

"He was a great guy and a great player," she recalls.

Biron has a superstition that if the Red Sox score in the first inning, they will win. She also has another tactic to help out her favorite team.

"I pray wicked hard for them," she said.
