Police called over Facebook video of 'birthday smoothie'

SALEM, Mass. — What started out as a birthday joke for a 5-year-old boy turned into a visit from police, thanks to Facebook.

Police in this suburb north of Boston said they got an anonymous tip from someone who said she saw a video of a Facebook friend serving her 5-year-old son a special birthday smoothie. The mother "garnished the drink with a strawberry ... (and) told her son it was a cocktail to celebrate his birth," according to a police report.

Video of the celebration was seen by about 500 of the woman's Facebook friends, police said.

The tipster said she was worried that the mother was endangering her child by letting him drink alcohol. When police arrived at the woman's house, they learned that the drink was made with strawberries and ginger ale, and they found no evidence that the boy had been given alcohol.

Salem police warned the mother to be more careful about she posts on Facebook.
