School board candidates try to make the grade with voters

The candidates for School Committee gave Superintendent C. Milton Burnett a respectable "B" average, but their own work will be graded at the polls Nov. 6.
Of the six-candidate slate, the top three vote-getters will earn a spot on the School Committee. Two committee seats were left open by departing members Anne Manning and Mark Bartkiewicz.
David McGeney, the lone incumbent, brings the most experience to the election.

Ward races keep focus close to home

Politics don't get any more local than a City Council ward race.
This fall, three of the city's six ward councilors face opposition on the ballot.
In South Peabody, Ward 1 Councilor Barry Osborne is seeking re-election, challenged by Russell Donovan, a past candidate for the seat. Ward 4 Councilor Robert Driscoll is running against political newcomer Scott L'Italien. Ward 6 Councilor Michael Zellen faces business owner Barry Sinewitz to represent West Peabody.

School building projects, senior housing, bus fees mark Bonfanti's tenure

Sometimes what you don't do is as important as what you do.
According to Historical Commission President Bill Power, that's the case with Mayor Michael Bonfanti. "The biggest thing he did | recommending that they do not build a new high school." The mayor then went to work, winning support for a plan to renovate the building.
"It saved us a ton of dough," Power said. "All that money went into other things | things that never would have been funded otherwise."

10 at-large candidates run for five council seats

The retirement of two veteran at-large city councilors, Fred Murtagh and Judy Selesnick, has busted this year's race wide open with 10 candidates vying for five seats, including the three incumbents -- Jim Liacos, Mike Garabedian and Ted Bettencourt.
Several of the new contestants have city government credentials.
Joining the chase for a two-year term are former Councilor-at-large Bill Toomey and former Ward Councilor Jim Moutsoulas, along with retiring School Committee member Anne Manning, former School Committee member Dave Gravel and Library Trustee Margaret Tierney. Also in the race is Philip Xindaris, who previously ran for mayor and councilor, and political novice Joseph Walsh, a recent political science graduate.
