Daily News of Newburyport

Helen Caldicott, scientist, physician and author, will discuss her new book, "Nuclear Power is not the Answer," in a program Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. at Newburyport City Hall, 60 Pleasant St.

A spokeswoman for the antinuclear movement, Caldicott has devoted 35 years to educating the public about what she sees as the hazards of the nuclear age. She argues against nuclear power as a safe, affordable, and just alternative energy, and seeks to expose the adverse environmental and political consequences of its expansion.

Caldicott is the co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, which was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and the 2003 winner of the Lannon Cultural Freedom Prize. She divides her time between Australia and Washington, D.C., where she recently established the Nuclear Policy Research Institute.
