Port photographer named 'Best in Show'

Newburyport photographer Jay McCarthy received the highest honor for the second part of the Newburyport Art Association's winter members show. McCarthy's submission, "Hues of Vinalhaven: Vinalhaven Harbor, Maine," was given the Sam Sargent Award for Best of Show.

Local gallery owners Christotha Fitzmaurice from Chameleon and Kari Bernard from The Walsingham Gallery met this week to select the winning pieces. This part of the show, which opens tomorrow, features acrylic painting, pastel, mixed media, fine crafts and photography. It runs through Feb. 25.

The public is invited to attend a reception with the artists Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. where artists will receive their awards.

The pair judged a total of 204 submissions and accepted 151 entries.

The show includes 36 pieces of acrylic paintings, 56 photographs, 35 pastels, seven fine crafts and 17 mixed media.

Ninety-nine artists were accepted into the show; 116 artists submitted works.

In addition to McCarthy, the winners also include: Ryan Kelley, for "Tree-O," Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank award for work in mixed media; Sarah Demrow-Dent, for "Son Flower Bloom," Mary Alice Arakelian Memorial Award for work in acrylic; Jay McCarthy, for "Hues of Vinalhaven: Vinalhaven Harbor, Maine," H. Patterson Hale, Jr. Charitable Foundation Award for work in photography; Janice Jones, for "City Cycling," Strem Chemicals, Inc. award for work in fine craft; Noriko Fox, for "Garlic," Institution for Savings award for work in pastel.

Receiving Honorable Mentions were: Wendy Cole for "Singing the Blues" (acrylics); Mary Beninato for "Funky Teapot" (mixed media); Susan Kneeland for "Seasonal Vacancy" (pastel); Jack Fowler for "Roll" (photography); and Douglas Johnson for "Island Sunset" (fine craft).
