Newburyport Winter Carnival postponed

A forecast for heavy rain and warm temperatures has prompted Newburyport Winter Carnival planners to postpone this weekend’s event until Saturday, Jan. 25.

"After two years running of canceling the event altogether, it was difficult to make the decision not to hold it this weekend,” Parks Administrator Lise Reid said.

But co-organizers Newburyport Youth Services and Reid agreed that the warm temperatures would make for slushy ice conditions, and a thawed event site with lack of snow cover would result in damages to the Bartlet Mall lawn.

“Volunteers have done such a great job creating a beautiful skating surface, I am confident their efforts will pay off in two weeks,” Reid said.

Not surprisingly, organizers are hopeful the next fortnight will bring a new coating of snow for the event on the 25th.
