The Lookout: Gallery opens 2014 season with landscapes

Pastels by Newburyport landscape artist Skip Motes will be featured in the first show of the year at the gallery in the Firehouse Center for the Arts.

“Motes Motifs: New Year, New Show, New Art” features a large body of new works, which Motes describes as “tone poems that interpret the color, texture, beauty and fragility of the Great Marsh and seacoast landscape of the region.” He often makes his own pastels and builds up the texture with printing inks and dry color pigments.

A free opening reception will be held Sunday, Jan. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. and will feature music by guitarist John Tavano. The show runs from Jan. 2-26.

The gallery at the Firehouse, located in Newburyport’s Market Square, is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., later on performance days. “Works in Slate” by Michael Updike is currently on display.

The celebration will include a buffet and party favors, as well as a countdown to midnight and balloon drop to ring in 2013.

Tickets are $25 for the show only and $55 for the show and buffet. Dinner starts at 7 p.m., and the concert runs from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. For more information, visit www.blueoceanmusichall.com.
