The Lookout: New exhibit celebrates old-fashioned romance

A “Downton Abbey”-inspired art exhibit opens this weekend at The Walsingham Gallery in Newburyport.

Long before the British drama won fans across the pond with its glamour and romance, artist James Kubiatowicz was painting his own scenes of dinner jackets and evening gowns.

“Gestures of Romance: New Paintings From James Kubiatowicz” captures the little moments that define relationships, like a man buckling a woman’s shoe or a waiter arriving with a birthday cake.

The public is invited to meet Kubiatowicz at a free artist’s reception on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the 47 Merrimac St. gallery. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibit will run through Feb. 22. For more information, call 978-499-4411 or visit www.walsinghamgallery.com.

Gala to help orchestras’ programs

The second annual “Warm Music for a Winter’s Night,” a gala benefit for the Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestras, will be held Saturday in Rockport.

Kendrick Oliver and the New Life Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. at the Shalin Liu Performance Center, 37 Main St. Organizers say the 15-piece orchestra has been selling out concert halls since its inception in 1995, when Oliver was a student at Berklee College of Music.

The NMYO serves northeast Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, with student musicians from more than 40 towns, including Amesbury, Georgetown, Newburyport, Rowley and West Newbury.

Proceeds benefit the NMYO’s special programs for young musicians, community outreach efforts and scholarship fund.

Tickets are $25 and $50 for general admission; $75 for patron, which includes premium seating and inclusion in the concert program; and $150 for benefactor, which includes premium seating, a pre-concert reception with hors d’oeuvres and acknowledgment in the program. For benefactor tickets or more information, contact NMYO at info@nmyo.org or 978-309-9833. For all other tickets, contact Rockport Music at www.rockportmusic.org or 978-546-7391.
