Health Beat:

A new yoga class for female veterans will start Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Amesbury Council on Aging.

Designed specifically for those with post-traumatic stress disorder and/or military sexual trauma, the 75-minute mat class will be held over 12 weeks. The time is yet to be determined.

Participants should be able to get up and down from the floor with relative ease. The class is open to women from Amesbury and surrounding communities.

Peer-led support for mental illness

The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness hosts a Family & Friends Support Group on the first and third Thursday of every month.

The peer-led group is for those who have a loved one dealing with a mental illness and offers understanding, support and resource information.

Sessions are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. On the first Thursday of the month, they take place at Merrimack Valley Hospital, 62 Brown St., Haverhill. On the third Thursday, they are held at Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, 63 State St.

NAMI Northeast Essex also holds a Connection Peer Support Group, for anyone with a psychiatric diagnosis, at Merrimack Valley Hospital on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. For more information on that group, email elizakwilson@yahoo.com.

Learn ‘The Three Characteristics of Reality’

A free lecture on “The Three Characteristics of Reality” will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the First Religious Society in Newburyport.

Speaker Jesse Fallon will talk about how we’re causing optional suffering in the world and how we can lessen it. Fallon, the spiritual adviser for Wisdom’s Heart in Rockport, has been studying and practicing dharma and meditation since 2004.
