The Lookout: Local artists show off their work

The Winter Members Juried Show, Part 1, opens tomorrow and runs through Feb. 1 at the Newburyport Art Association.

The exhibit features acrylic, fine craft, mixed media, pastel and photography. A free opening reception and awards presentation will be held Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Award winners for the show, which was juried by Mary Harding of the George Marshall Store Gallery in Maine and features 110 entries by 83 artists, include:

Sam Sargent Award for Best of Show: Jeff Ventola, “Winter’s End” (pastel)

Institution for Savings Award for Work in Acrylic: Madeleine Hopkins, “Snow & Pines”

Strem Chemicals Award for Work in Mixed Media: Stephen Martin, “Jack in the Box”

Re/Max on the River Award for Work in Photography: Debra Woodward, “Purple Blanket”

Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank Award for Work in Pastel: Janet Macleod, “Mid-Summer at Cox”

Honorable mentions: Cara Goiner, “Here We Stand,” acrylic; Catherine Davis, “Painted Desert After the Rain,” photography; Lisa Bohnwagner, “Untitled,” acrylic

The association is located at 65 Water St. and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Explore French culture with Tannery Series

The Tannery Series is kicking off its fifth season next Thursday with “La Vie Boheme: Adam Gopnik on French Life, Light and Love” at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem.

Gopnik is an acclaimed writer for The New Yorker and the author of a number of books and essay collections, including “Paris to the Moon.”

The program, part of an evening of French cafe culture to celebrate the new impressionism exhibit, will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the museum, located in East India Square on Essex Street.
