Newburyport Daily News
---- — Newburyport artist Jan Roy is having a lucky winter.
Just one month after earning the Best in Show award in the first part of the Newburyport Art Association’s winter members show, Roy received notification this week that she also earned the top prize for the second half of the show, which opens tomorrow.
Roy, who has been painting full-time for 13 years, won the award for her acrylic painting called “Lester’s Barn.”
She was given the honor by the jurors for this year’s show: Lucas Spivey, exhibitions manager at Montserrat College of Art and Design, and Diana Tuite, an adjunct professor at Maine College of Art. The pair also judged the submissions in the first portion of the show last month.
“All of Roy’s aesthetic choices are spot-on here,” Tuite said of the painting. “Her decisions to use the vertical format and to come in close to her subject, so that it fills the entire picture plane, create palpable structural tension that is reinforced by her use of the texture and colors of the acrylic.”
This half of the show, which runs through March 2 at the Art Association, features works in acrylic, fine craft, mixed media, pastel and photography. A total of 137 works were accepted by 100 artist members.
This includes: 34 acrylic paintings, 47 photos, 24 pastels, four works of fine crafts and 28 mixed media projects.
In addition to Roy, the winners are:
Madeleine Hopkins, Mary Alice Arakelian Memorial Award for Work in acrylic for “Winter Light”
Janice Jones, Strem Chemicals, Inc. award for Best in Fine Craft for “Reinterpreting a Whistler Etching, Street at Saverne”
Jack Fowler, H. Patterson Hale, Jr. Charitable Foundation award for Best in Photography for “The Gift”
Patricia Schappler, Institution for Savings award for Best in Pastel for “Tiger Girl”
Stephen Martin, Newburyport Five Cents Savings award for Best in Mixed Media for “Water the Flowers While I’m Gone, Junior”
Also receiving honorable mentions are: Debbie Shirley, Tom Robinson-Cox, Christopher Ward, Pat DuBois and Barbara Nachmias-Kedesdy.
