Sewing for Smiles at Amesbury's Crafters Quarters Sunday

Crafters Quarters in Amesbury in conjunction with ConKerr Cancer is holding a Sewing for Smiles event Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the shop, 36 Main St.

The shop invites the public to join in sewing creative pillowcases for young people ages 2 to 17 with life-changing illnesses and injuries. The pillowcases are donated to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., as part of an effort that seeks to give patients with an extended illness a warm, colorful place to rest their heads, providing a bright spot for them.

ConKerr Cancer is a foundation started by a mother whose son had to undergo uncomfortable chemotherapy stays at Philadelphia-area hospitals.

Sewing machines, fabric and thread will be donated by Crafters Quarters. Cutters, sewers and people to package and iron are needed. While fabric will be available, people are invited to bring their own as well.

The event qualifies as part of the Disney Give a Day volunteer program that awards participants a day at Disney parks in exchange for a day of volunteering.
