People Helping People

The following volunteer opportunities are available in the Greater Newburyport area:

Anna Jaques Hospital is looking for information desk volunteers. The shifts are 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Volunteers will greet patients and visitors, provide directions, and occasionally escort patients and visitors to their destinations. Call the Anna Jaques Hospital volunteer office at 978-463-1150. There are also available volunteer shifts for the gift shop and mailroom.

Auntie’s Closet, a charity thrift store in Salisbury, needs volunteers. Tasks include counter sales, organization and pricing Thursday through Sunday. Call Vicki at 978-376-5629 or email Mel at mel@yardsaleforcharity.org for more information. Auntie’s Closet is located at 48 Elm St. (Route 110).

Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley is recruiting and training volunteers to help the elderly with various tasks. These include: providing transportation to medical appointments and accompanying elders to these appointment, food shopping, pharmacy pickups, bill management, and companionship. Historic New England, contact: Bethany Groff, Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, 5 Little’s Lane, Newbury, 978-462-2634. Volunteers needed at historic house museums in Newbury. HNE is looking for people to assist with a variety of positions, including docents, clerical, reception desk at visitor’s center, special event volunteers and others as needed. Training provided.

Lowell’s Boat Shop, 459 Main St., Amesbury, 978-834-0050. Volunteers needed as docents, maintenance projects and administration activities.

The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, a nonprofit, no-kill cat shelter, needs volunteer help for cat care in the Salisbury adoption center, administrative tasks and special events, and feral cat feeders (volunteers ages 15 and older), as well as volunteers for foster care, feral spay/neuter clinics, feral cat trappers and more (volunteers ages 18 and older). Volunteers may apply online at www.mrfrs.org, or stop by the shelter at 63 Elm St. (Route 110), to fill out an application. Call 978-462-0760 for more information.
