Parents Helping Parents, nancy@parentshelpingparents.org. Child care volunteers are needed to care for the children of parents attending a free and confidential parent support group Monday evenings, 7-9 p.m. Help parents in our community become connected and supported.

The Peace Garden is seeking volunteer gardeners. Established on the waterfront to honor those who have lost their lives in Iraq, the garden was created by a local chapter of the national organization Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND). Volunteers work together in the garden as part of a team and receive notice of gardening times by email once or twice a month during the growing season. Gardening times are weather-dependent and usually last about two hours. Contact Joanna Hammond at 978-270-3941.

Pettengill House, P.O. Box 5551, 13 Lafayette Road, Salisbury, 978-463-8801. The Pettengill House is a nonprofit community social service organization serving the greater Newburyport area. A variety of volunteer opportunities exist, including help with office work, food pantry, special events and fundraisers, and special programs. ROOF Over Head Collaborative works to support homeless and at-risk families in our community as they transition to permanent housing and independent living through community collaboration, education and advocacy. Volunteer opportunities include readying homes for families, serving on the Board of Directors, becoming a member of a committee and helping with events. Salvation Army, 40 Water St., Newburyport, 978-465-0883. Volunteers needed to assist elderly, visit nursing homes, odd jobs and youth programs, feeding programs, food pantry, seasonal help.

The Samaritans, 24-hour suicide prevention hotline, 866-912-4673. Volunteers trained to take shifts responding to hotline calls.

Shared Caring Hospice Inc., PO Box 564, Newburyport, 978-462-1210. Trained volunteers needed to work with the terminally ill.
