The Lookout: Art show to benefit Newburyport Education Foundation

Work by nationally recognized artist Karen Blackwood is currently on display and for sale at Oregano Pizzeria & Ristorante in downtown Newburyport.

Thirty percent of all sales this month will benefit the Newburyport Education Foundation, which is raising money this year for lights, sound equipment and curtains for the Molin/Nock auditorium.

Blackwood is an American contemporary artist who specializes in landscapes. She is a founding member of the Adirondack School of Painters and is represented by Susan Powell Fine Art in Madison, Conn. She recently moved to Newburyport with her husband, “Days of our Lives” actor Steve Blackwood, and daughter, Nicole.

A free reception with Blackwood will be held this Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the 16 Pleasant St. auditorium. Complimentary appetizers, party favors and a cash bar will be available. Newburyport High School students will provide music.

Cantemus celebrates ‘Stars and Stones’

A guest jazz trio will join the Cantemus Chamber Chorus for its concerts this weekend in Newburyport and Hamilton.

Pianist Joe Mulholland, bassist Bruno Raberg and drummer Jon Hazilla from the Berklee College of Music will be featured in “A Christmas Jazz Trio” of familiar carols and on Rob Landes’ “Jazz Gloria.”

The concerts, titled “Stars and Stones,” will also include movements from song sets by Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre. Music director Jane Ring Frank said the program is inspired by a quote from “The Way of Stars and Stones” by Wilna Wilkinson: “For every star in the Milky Way, there’s a stone on the pathway of the Camino; each a reflected soulmate, an echo in the cosmos.”

Cantemus’ 44 members come from 23 communities on the North Shore, including Byfield, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley and West Newbury.

The performances are scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Christ Church of Hamilton-Wenham, 149 Asbury St., Hamilton, and Sunday at 4 p.m. at Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb St., Newburyport. The Newburyport concert is a change from the usual location.
