Lookout: Tuckermans at 9 return to Newbury

The rockin’ sounds of the a cappella group Tuckermans at 9 will once again fill First Parish Church of Newbury this weekend.

The group will perform Saturday, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“The church has great acoustics,” baritone and founder Mark Miller said in a press release. “We can’t wait to try out some new material we’ve added since our show there last winter. And we’ll also sprinkle in a few holiday tunes.”

A cappella music has seen a surge in popularity recently, due in part to the launch of a cappella radio shows, the television show, “The Sing Off,” and groups like Rockapella, Toxic Audio and Straight No Chaser.

Based in New Hampshire, Tuckermans at 9 performs contemporary a cappella versions of well-known pop, rock, blues and light jazz songs.

“Audiences of all ages enjoy our shows because there’s literally something familiar there for everyone,” Miller added. “We choose just plain good, well-written material; we also have a lot of fun on stage and it’s contagious for the audience! It’s really a show, not just a concert.”

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Call 978-465-5597 to reserve tickets. First Parish Church of Newbury is located at 20 High Road, Route 1A in Newbury.

Retired chaplain speaks at library tonight

The Rev. William E. Alberts will read from his new book, “A Hospital Chaplain at the Crossroads of Humanity,” tonight at 7:30 at the Emma Andrews Library in Newburyport. The reading is part of the library’s fall author series.

Alberts retired last year after 18 years of hospital chaplaincy at Boston Medical Center. His book is a collection of more than 50 stories from his career. He discusses his experiences “serving interdenominationally and inter-religiously anyone who asked, and working with his Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other colleagues.”
