The Lookout: Dance event to benefit Wounded Warrior Project

Dancers from all over New England will perform a wide variety of Middle Eastern dances at the Grog in Newburyport on Saturday.

The event, running from 2 to 5 p.m., will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Also known as belly dancing, the Middle Eastern dance form has been done for thousands of years and has roots and ties in traditional, folkloric and ethnic dances from around the world. Belly dancing is done by both men and women for ceremonies and family celebrations, and for themselves.

The Grog event will showcase a variety of styles, including American cabaret, tribal fusion, folkloric and American tribal style. Occasionally, the dance is accompanied by props, such as veils, swords or baskets, that are used to enhance the movements.

The Wounded Warrior Project assists veterans and their families in adjusting to a new normal after sometimes-catastrophic injuries.

Admission for the 21-plus event is $10, and the doors open at 1 p.m. The Grog is located at 13 Middle St. For more information, email or call 978-388-4148.

Poetry program in Newburyport

A poetry reading on Wednesday represents a unique collaboration between the Powow River Poets and the Joppa Flats Education Center.

Designed for a non-poet audience, “Poetry and the Experience of Nature” will illustrate the current state of a vibrant, centuries-old interaction between the writing of literature and the experience of the natural world.

Scheduled readers include Powow River Poets members Rhina Espaillat, Barbara Lydecker Crane and David Davis, who is also the poet in residence at Joppa Flats.

Guests are invited to bring their favorite poems, two minutes or shorter, to read during an open mike period.

The reading starts at 7:30 p.m. at Joppa Flats, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport. Admission is free for Mass Audubon members and $4 for nonmembers. For more information, call 978-462-9998 or visit
