The Lookout: Kick off summer at Salisbury Beach

A Summer Kick-off Celebration is planned for Saturday from 4 to 10:30 p.m. at Salisbury Beach.

The free event features the popular annual pizza-eating contest, as well as the first performance in this year’s Summer Concert Series. Roomful of Blues will entertain with a variety of swing, rock ’n’ roll, jump blues, boogie-woogie and soul music from the band’s 45-year recording career. The Rhode Island group has toured worldwide and been nominated for five Grammy Awards.

Children will have plenty of activities to keep them busy during the day, from the Roaming Railroad to face-painting to the Awesome Robb Pirate Show. Spider-Man and Batman will also make an appearance, along with speed artist Rob Surrette.

Saturday also marks the beginning of the beach’s weekly fireworks shows, which are launched from a barge directly off Salisbury Beach Center at 10:15 p.m.

The celebration is sponsored by the Salisbury Beach Partnership. For more information, visit
