Health Beat: Christmas in July race raises money for cancer research

The second annual Christmas in July 5K road race will be held Saturday, July 27, in West Newbury.

Founded by Rachael Travers in honor of her late father, Jack, the race is a fundraiser for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund.

Jack Travers was a Georgetown native who was diagnosed with cancer of unknown primary in 2006. He died 10 months later. Rachael turned to running as a way to cope and came up with the idea for the race in 2011. Her sister Katie also helps plan and manage the event.

The race will start at 9 a.m. at White Gate Christmas Farm, 28 Ash St., and follow a flat, scenic 3.1-mile course. Parking is available at the farm, which is owned by cancer survivor Pat Kelly, Jack’s sister.

Registration is $30, which includes an event T-shirt and post-race snacks. To sign up, visit or any Greater Boston Running Co. location.

Reunion for those born at Anna Jaques

Anna Jaques Hospital is inviting everyone who was born there to a reunion on Monday, July 29.

The second annual “Born @ Anna Jaques” event starts with registration at 5 p.m. and includes a group photograph at 6:15, following by the singing of “Happy Birthday” and birthday cake on the front lawn at the hospital. Food and drinks will be available from local vendors.

Those who register in advance will be entered into a drawing for a $500 engraved brick to be placed at the hospital. Attendees who make a donation of $25 or more to the Anna Jaques Community Health Foundation will receive a T-shirt and photo of this year’s gathering. Donations will benefit the Birth Center.
