Health Beat: Quilt raffle to benefit locals' Run for the Memory

Perennial marathoners and road race participants Dale Ann and Dale Bob Eckert of Newburyport are selling tickets for a benefit drawing for a 88-by-72-inch handmade quilt to support the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts/New Hampshire.

The quilt titled "My Sister's Heart" was made by Gabrielle Granger-Clark, Leigh Ann Haggett and Judy Avery Granger and quilted by Northwind Quilting Studio of Whitefield, N.H.

Raffle tickets are $10 each or $25 for three. The drawing will be held March 14. Proceeds will support the Eckerts' participation in the 2012 Run for the Memory Boston Marathon Team. For information or raffle tickets, visit http://alz.kintera.org/boston2012/quilt.

Arc offering social skills program at YWCA

The Arc of Greater Haverhill/Newburyport and Paula Thompson, LICSW, will be offering social skills programs in a fun recreational setting. Participants will meet at the Greater Newburyport YWCA before venturing out into the community for some fun.

The Arc is a community-based organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The sessions will help members build confidence, practice conversation and learn about resources in their community.

The sessions will meet on Saturdays: Feb. 11, March 3, March 24 and March 31.

Participants ages 15 to 21 will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., ages 22 to 38 will meet from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. There is a $200 fee, including activities.

Weight loss program at Dr. Dan's

Dr. Dan Eyink will host a weight-loss talk Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Eyink developed his Dynamic Weight Loss program to help those struggling with weight issues and who are in need of a program designed to see significant weight loss and improved health.

Pizza fundraiser for Diabetes Association

Fitness Together is hosting a fundraiser to support the American Diabetes Association on Tuesday at Flatbread Co. in Market Square in downtown Amesbury. For every pizza sold between 5 and 9 p.m., including eat-in and take-out orders, a portion of the profits ($3.50 for every large pizza, $1.75 for every small) will go to the American Diabetes Association.

Depression lecture in Newburyport

Atria Merrimack Place in Newburyport will host Sheryl Duffy, RN, on Thursday.

Duffy will give a lecture called "Depression: Let's Help Each Other" at 10 a.m. at the assisted living facility. It is open to the public. Atria Merrimack Place is at 85 Storey Ave. in Newburyport.

Support group facilitator sought

The Lotus Healing Arts Foundation is looking for a volunteer with some facilitation experience to lead their monthly chronic Lyme support group on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Registration is under way for triathlon

Never tried a triathlon? Now's the time with Tri for the YWCA, the third annual Indoor Triathlon on Sunday, March 25. It is hosted by The YWCA Greater Newburyport and the Masters Swim Group.

Events will include: Indoor Swim: 10 minutes in 25-yard pool; Indoor Cycle: 25 minute ride on Spin Bike; Outdoor Run/Walk: 1.5 miles on the Rail Trail.

The Tri for the YWCA begins at 8 a.m. with 15-minute staggered time starts. It is open to all fitness levels. Enter as an individual and try your best at all three sports or enter as a team and do the sport you like best.
