The Lookout: Poems and birds combine in Joppa Flats event

A free special event is planned for Saturday in Rowley to coincide with this weekend’s Bird-a-thon hosted by Mass Audubon.

David Davis, the poet-in-residence at the Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport and a member of the Powow River Poets, will count bird species and read poems at Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary on Patmos Road.

From 1 to 5 p.m., the public is invited to join Davis and his Bird-a-thon team for short guided walks. Possible bird species that may be spotted include spring migrant warblers, orchard orioles, red-bellied woodpeckers and other songbirds.

The Bird-a-thon, the wildlife organization’s biggest fundraiser, is a competition that runs throughout the state from 6 p.m. tomorrow through 6 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 978-462-9998 or visit www.massaudubon.org/birdathon.
