The Lookout: Poems and birds combine in Joppa Flats event

(Continued)

Open mikes in downtown Port

A weekly open mike called Merrimac Mic is held every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Plum Island Coffee Roasters.

Poets, writers and storytellers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for five minutes at the microphone. No experience is necessary.

Tonight’s event will feature Blaine Hebbel, founder and president of Ring of Bone Press. He has put together “Wild Women of Lynn,” a book of poetry featuring the stories of Jocelyn Almy-Testa, Alicia Churchill, Elizabeth Gordon McKim, Kato Mele and Kerry Zagarella. Upcoming speakers include Ken and Nadine Delano on May 22, Jnana Hodson on May 29 and Hebbel again on June 5.

The coffee shop is located at 54R Merrimac St., Newburyport. The shop itself is closed during the open mikes, so attendees are encouraged to bring their own refreshments.

For more information, call 978-465-4428 or email merrimacmic@gmail.com.

Additionally, musician and actor Steve Blackwood is hosting Talent Tuesdays, a weekly open mike at Oregano Pizzeria and Ristorante in Newburyport.

Blackwood, a Newburyport resident who played Bart on “Days of our Lives,” will sing jazz standards, blues, Sinatra, selections from the Great American Songbook and Brazilian tunes. Local singers and musicians will then be invited to show off their talents, as well.

The open mikes are held every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the 16 Pleasant St. restaurant.

Entertainment and food at 17 State St.

17 State Street Cafe’s “Beats, Burgers and Brews” will feature Joe Hanley tomorrow and Josef Nocera on Saturday.

Hanley, who has spent the past 20 years playing around New England with his bands Beyond the Pale and The Foggy Duo, is getting back to his solo acoustic roots.

Nocera is a singer, songwriter and performer who lives in Newburyport. He plays original music along with tunes by artists of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.

Both shows are from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the downtown Newburyport restaurant.
