Holiday open house at Historical Society

Several local garden clubs have worked their holiday magic and decked the halls at the Historical Society of Old Newbury’s Cushing House.

The public is invited to check out the holiday decorations on Saturday during an open house from noon to 4 p.m. A second open house will be held on Monday from noon to 4 p.m. Both are free to attend.

The home, at 98 High St., boasts fresh seasonal arrangements creatively rendered by garden club members, hand-baked, spice-scented ornaments, Federal period holiday decorations and antique toy “gifts” from the Historical Society of Old Newbury’s collection.

The Cushing House was decorated by Historical Society members, Colby Farms and garden club volunteers from Newbury, Newburyport and West Newbury.

Philharmonic Orchestra concert Sunday

The Merrimack Valley Philharmonic Orchestra will perform their holiday concert on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Rogers Center for the Arts at Merrimack College in North Andover.

The orchestra will be joined by the Gospel Choir, under the direction of Renese King. King has performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra and Tanglewood Festival Chorus; she will sing “Go Tell it on the Mountain” and “O Holy Night” during the concert with the accompaniment of the orchestra.

The performance will also feature student violinist and orchestra member Paul Cronin performing Pablo Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen “Opus 20, No. 1.” The festivities will include with a sing-along for the audience of many holiday favorites.

Prior to the concert, the orchestra will hold their annual silent auction, beginning at 1 p.m.Winners will be announced during the concert.

Tickets for the holiday concert are $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, and $5 for children ages 4 to 12. To purchase, visit www.mvpomusic.org. They will also be sold at the door.
