The next set: Art Association hangs second half of fall show

The second part of the Newburyport Art Association's fall members juried show begins tomorrow.

Part II includes works of watercolor, pastel, photography, mixed media, drawing and digital arts. It follows the first part of the show, which was held earlier this month and featured other media.

There were 212 works submitted to this show. Jane Young, owner of the Chase Young gallery in Boston, served as the juror. Members are allowed to submit two works in the media forms to be judged.

Of the total submissions, 172 works were accepted. These included: 41 watercolors, 63 photos, 20 pastels, 13 drawings, 32 mixed media works and three digital art pieces.

One hundred nineteen artists entered works in Part II.

"I loved the wonderful range of media in this show," Young wrote in her review of the show. "It is exciting to see photography, drawing, painting and digital media all together in one space."

Medford's Al Hiltz beat out his fellow artists and earned the Sam Sargent Award for Best of Show for his photograph "Modern Kitchen."

"The strangely beautiful textures and colors of the decaying walls in this scene are what first drew me in," Young wrote. "The brilliant and cheerful red text peeking through the doorway in the otherwise depressing scene creates a lovely juxtaposition of color and emotion. This piece revealed itself to me in layers, and I could not help looking closer and closer.

"It really just stuck out in a big room full of photography," Young said.

The second part of the show will run through Nov. 12 with an artists' reception set for Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m.

Here are the remaining award winners:

Jacob Towle, Strem Chemicals Inc. Award for drawing, "My Hand"

Muriel Angelil, The Provident Bank Community Foundation Award for digital art, "Arab Women"

Joanna Doyle, Newburyport Institution for Savings Award for mixed media, "Chartered Sea"

Mike Thurston, Newburyport Five Cents Savings Award for photography, "Inside the Mickey Mouse Club"
