The Lookout: Celebration planned to launch locals’ new book

A launch party will be held Sunday for a new historical children’s book written by Newbury author Donna Seim and illustrated by Newburyport artist Susan Spellman.

An interactive, living-history family event from noon to 4 p.m. at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, N.H., will celebrate “Charley,” based on the true story of a Boston street kid abandoned by his father in 1910. Seim was inspired to learn more about early 20th-century life in New England and the plight of orphans after hearing Charley Ryan’s stories from his son.

The party will feature costumed characters, wood oven-baked cookies, a children’s choir and games inspired by the book, which follows Charley as he is taken in by a Maine farm family. Seim will offer readings and signings at 1 and 3 p.m., and Spellman will give sketch demonstrations.

Seim is also the author of two award-winning picture books, “Where is Simon, Sandy?” and “Satchi and Little Star,” and the middle grade reader “Hurricane Mia.” Spellman has illustrated all of Seim’s books, along with more than 25 other titles.

Admission to Sunday’s event is free. For more information, visit or

Artist pays tribute to mom with paintings

A solo exhibition by Georgetown artist Lynne Schulte will be shown through September at the Georgetown Peabody Library.

“Remembrance — The Pink Chair Project” celebrates the memory of Schulte’s mother. The paintings all include an Adirondack chair — painted in her mother’s favorite color, bright pink — placed into various locations that have special meaning for the artist or her mother.

Visitors are invited to participate in the project by posting a note to a loved one or writing a longer excerpt in the remembrance book.

The library is located at 2 Maple St. For more information on Schulte’s art, visit
