The Newburyport Art Association will turn to the performing arts this spring, when they welcome a full-length, one-man play into the gallery space on Water Street.
"Vincent" tells the story of troubled artist Vincent Van Gogh, through the efforts of husband-wife team Doug and Kristina Brendel. The pair first presented the show at their gallery, Time and Tide Fine Art in Ipswich.
There, an artist member saw the performance. She happened to also belong to the Newburyport Art Association and mentioned it to executive director Elena Bachrach, who reached out to the Brendels.
The performance will come to Newburyport from March 16 to 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow.
The plot of "Vincent" centers around Van Gogh's brother, Theo, who gathers friends together a week after his death "and tells them his side of the story, occasionally reading from Vincent's letters, and often playing the role of Vincent himself," according to the art association.
Kristina Brendel directs the show and her husband plays the role of Theo.
Throughout the show, on a large screen behind the action, the audience sees the artwork that Vincent was creating during the events Theo is depicting — a virtual tour of Van Gogh's lifetime of artistic work.
Theo takes his friends on a wild ride through Vincent's early years as a Bible-thumping preacher, then as the husband of a prostitute and eventually as an inmate in an insane asylum.
Tickets are $15 for the general public and $12 for art association members. For phone ticket purchases, call the art association at 978-465-8769 or visit the gallery on Water Street.
