Blues and soul singer Ruthie Foster is the latest performer to take the stage at the Belleville Church on High Street in Newburyport as part of the Root Music Series.
Foster will give a concert tonight, beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and younger. They are available for purchase at the door.
The singer has been called “one of the greatest roots music voices of her generation,” notes organizers, as she sings passionately and taps into her heritage of soul, blues, folk, and gospel music.
The Root Music Concert Series began as a way to bring a variety of high quality music to the local community. Over the last several years, the program has hosted performers who specialize in a cappella, zydeco, blues, bluegrass, Cajun, Celtic, country folk, gospel, Irish, jazz and world music.
The series is a fundraiser for the Belleville church and proceeds are used to restore and maintain the historic 1867 Meetinghouse and adjacent Fiske Chapel complex.
Art reception for DeGeorge tonight
The Provident Bank’s Lobby for the Arts program continues tonight with an opening reception for local photographer Suzanne DeGeorge.
DeGeorge traces her love of photography back to her childhood when she would use her grandmother’s old Kodak Brownie to take pictures of her younger sister. When she moved to Newburyport several years ago, DeGeorge began to seriously pursue her hobby and devoted more of her time to taking photographs. Today, she never leaves home without her camera.
DeGeorge’s exhibit, “The More I Look, The More I See!” will be on display through early January. The public can view her photographs during regular bank hours at the Storey Avenue branch.
She will also be on hand tonight to meet with visitors during a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
