Health Beat: Free dance workshops at wellness fair

The Seacoast Civic Dance Company will lead two complementary dance workshops at the "Seacoast Wellness Fair: Your Journey to Healthy Living" tomorrow in Portsmouth, N.H,

The fair will be held at Community Campus, 100 Campus Drive, Portsmouth, N.H. The dance troupe will perform several hip hop numbers at 12:30 p.m., followed by an open hip hop workshop for the public. At 1:30 p.m., they will give a Tap routine and then offer Tap lessons.

The non-profit SCDC, in partnership with the N.H. Academy of Performing Arts, frequently performs at community events and benefits including: programs for the American Cancer Society, breast cancer fundraisers, Market Square Day, Family Day at Maudslay State Park and Yankee Homecoming.

Bostick to walk for Down syndrome

Newburyport resident Buddy Bostick will join thousands at the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress 15th Annual Buddy Walk and Family Picnic on Oct. 9 in Wakefield.

The walk celebrates the Down syndrome community and promotes acceptance and inclusion. Bostick will walk as part of Team Anton, with John Anton, a 46-year-old self-advocate with Down syndrome, and Rep. Tom Sannicandro (D-Ashland) and his son David.

Bostick, Anton and Sannicandro worked together to change the name of the Department of Mental Retardation to the Department of Developmental Services.

Registration for the walk begins at 11 a.m. with the 3-mile walk kickoff starting at 1 p.m.

City, hospital hosting concussion symposium

The City of Newburyport is hosting a Concussion Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Newburyport High School Auditorium, 241 High St.

Dr. Ron Freid, chief of emergency medicine at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, and Todd Cronin, director of physical therapy at Anna Jaques, will be the featured speakers.

The symposium is sponsored by the Newburyport Health Department, Anna Jaques Hospital and Newburyport public schools. For more information, call Pat at the Health Department at 978-465-4410.
