Lookout: One act, short plays conclude New Works

The 11th annual New Works Festival at the Firehouse will conclude this weekend with a mix of one-act and short plays.

Each year, playwrights from across New England submit completed pieces that have never before been staged. A panel of theater professionals review the entries and the winners are presented as staged readings over the course of two weekends.

Tomorrow night, the one-act play winner, “Till That Lucky Day,” will begin at 8 p.m. Written by John Minigan, it “moves between present-day and the past as a troubled couple works through the risks and meaning of their marriage at the beginning and near the end of their lives,” according to New Works organizers.

Minigan was named “Best Playwright of 2011” in the 8-Minute Madness Festival in New York City and was a previous winner of the Firehouse New Works Festival One-Act category in 2010.

Following that play, three short works will be staged: “No Sheet” by Susan Ferber, “Talking” by Shari D. Frost and “Your Face is Familiar” by Jay MacNamee.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Saturday, seven short plays will be presented to conclude the festival.

Admission is $13 each night. For more information, call the box office at 978-462-7336 or visit online at

OpArt gallery reception set

The Provident Bank in Newburyport will host an artists’ reception tonight for the new exhibit in the “Lobby for the Arts” program.

This month, the Storey Avenue branch is featuring the works of the artists in OpArt, a program run by the Newburyport Art Association and Opportunity Works. Through the program, instructors from the Art Association teach participating artists from Opportunity Works how to professionally create, exhibit and market their artwork.

“Fresh Paint: An OpArt Exhibit” will run through Feb. 24. The artists will be at the bank from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to meet with the public.
