Lookout: Ruin/Renewal joins tour

The Newburyport-based band Ruin/Renewal will play during this weekend's Carnival of Madness Tour when it stops in Fitchburg on Monday.

The band recently released their debut extended play on Burst & Bloom Records.

The rock/blues band got their start in Newburyport a few years ago when natives Josh Pritchard and Brett Bashaw began playing together. The group also includes Joshua Homer.

The Carnival of Madness is a nationally touring summer rock festival. The only stop it will make in Massachusetts is in Fitchburg at the Central Mass. Expo Center from noon to 11:30 p.m.

Boucher is featured at art association

Gail Boucher is the featured artist at the Newburyport Art Association. Her show, "In The Sea & On The Sea: Gyotaku Fish Prints and Acrylic," begins today and runs through Sept. 7.

Boucher will hold an artist reception tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at the art association, 65 Water St., Newburyport.

Summer tours at Maudslay

Spend a final summer weekend at Maudslay State Park.

The park will offer two programs this weekend, designed to celebrate its history, while entertaining visitors as well.

On Saturday, "A Flash from the Past," a slideshow using archival photos and images of the former Moseley Estate, will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. Visitors should meet at the park headquarters for the presentation by the park interpreter.

Popcorn and beverages will be distributed by the Maudslay State Park Association. The program is free for attendees, but donations are always welcome.

On Sunday, a history tour of the estate will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The tour will showcase the landscaped estate, complete with formal gardens and greenhouses. Registration is not required. There is a $2 parking fee.

Live at Surfside 5

Local group Jessica Prouty Band will travel to Salisbury Saturday to entertain at Surfside 5 at Salisbury Beach.

This is the last performance by the teenage band before two of its members head off to college in Boston. The group has earned several accolades, including Best Teen Vocalist, Best Drummer and Number Two in the Country from SchoolJam USA's Search for the Best Teen Band in America in Downtown Disney.

The Marblehead band plans to continue to perform together. They will be playing with Lighthouse Trio and Blue Cucumber on Salisbury Beach on Saturday from 6:45 to 10 p.m.

Horse show Sunday

Bob-Lyn Stables at 91 Monroe St. in Amesbury invites the public to attend the Carriage Town Horse Show on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program will feature a variety of breed classes, equitation and pleasure classes for all disciplines (hunt seat, western, and saddle seat). All ages will run in two outdoor rings.

The show will be held rain or shine. There will be free admission with breakfast and lunch available for purchase. Bob-Lyn Stables will also host the Mass. Horsemen's Council Classic Finals Horse Show on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Jazz Vespers resumes Wednesday

After a summer hiatus, Jazz Vespers will resume at the First Religious Society on Pleasant Street, Newburyport, on Wednesday. The music will begin at 8 p.m. in the sanctuary. The evening will include performances by local jazz musicians and poetry/prose readings.

Also this month, The First Religious Society will showcase photographs by local students Westy and Lindsay Ford in its Tiny Gallery.

Westy is in his third year at Northeastern University's College of Engineering. Lindsay is a junior at Newburyport High School. They are the children of Wendy Chapin Ford and the late Bruce Ford.

Book signing at Jabberwocky

Join author Brendan DuBois as he speaks at Jabberwocky Bookshop next Thursday.

The program begins at 8 p.m. He will discuss his recent book, "Deadly Cove, a Lewis Cole Mystery," at the bookstore in the Tannery, 50 Water St., Newburyport.

This is the seventh novel in the Lewis Cole mystery series.

DuBois lives in New Hampshire. He has received the Shamus and Barry Awards for his short fiction, and has been short-listed for three Edgar Awards.

Go 'Behind the Scenes' at Refuge

Take a trip through the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

Over the upcoming weeks, a refuge ranger will offer a behind-the-scenes tour. While the tour will be conducted in a van, there will be several brief "drive-by" stops along the way.

The two-hour tour will run on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 9:30 a.m.; Friday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m.; Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 9:30 a.m.; Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m., and Thursday, Sept. 29, at 9:30 a.m. It will also be held on Sept. 11, 18 and 25 at 1 p.m.

Tour-goers will visit areas on the refuge otherwise closed to the public and are encouraged to bring binoculars or a camera. Advance registration is required.

Conservation presentation next week

The Nature Shop at Joppa Flats will host a free book signing and presentation: "Raptor Conservation and Education in the West," by Kate Davis on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Mass Audubon Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport.

Davis will discuss the conservation of western raptors, including hawks and owls, and her efforts to help protect them. Her presentation will include many raptor photos taken by top photographers in the field.

Davis is the founder and executive director of Raptors of the Rockies, a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates injured or orphaned birds of prey.

Amesbury author at Jabberwocky

Author Denise DeSimone will host a discussion and signing for her new memoir about her battle with cancer, "From Stage IV to Center Stage."

The book signing will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at Jabberwocky Bookshop, 50 Water St., Newburyport.
