NECC celebrates environmental awareness

Two local residents with national reputations are presenting free talks on environmental issues today at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill.

Allan Casebier of Newburyport, a professor of philosophy and film, will speak on environmental ethics from 11 a.m. to noon. He is emeritus professor at the University of Southern California and visiting scholar at the University of Miami.

Graphic artist Lance Hidy of Merrimac, who teaches art and design at Northern Essex, will highlight the career of photographer Ansel Adams from noon to 1 p.m. He'll show slides of Adams' work and explain the effect his work had on environmental legislation and as a wake-up call for the environmental movement in the 1960s.

Hidy worked with Adams in 1977-78 on the book "Yosemite and the Range of Light" and is designing a new book, "Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs," due out this fall.

The programs are part of a weeklong Environmental Awareness Celebration at Northern Essex. They take place in the Technology Center on the college's 100 Elliott St. campus. Contact Elaine Mawhinney at 978-556-3395 or emawhinney@necc.mass.edu.

Port artist in contemporary sculpture show

Newburyport's Elizabeth Leary Strazzulla is among the featured artists in a new sculpture exhibit at the Crane Collection/Cape Ann in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Strazzulla reveals her commitment to the classical tradition through her sculptures. Her bronze animal pieces capture the details and personalities of each subject. A former National Champion horsewoman who learned the importance of working directly from life while studying in Italy, she brings a personal knowledge to her equestrian art.

She will have several new pieces in the exhibit, as well as examples of her earlier work, including "Repose," a bronze of a gentle, old Lab, and a piece called "Spring," which shows song sparrows perched on a spading fork stuck into garden soil.

The other participating artists are Daniel Altshuler of Gloucester, who works in the figurative tradition; Ephraim Friedman of Beverly Farms, who sculpts in clay, bronze and stone, creating primarily figurative works; Ellen L. Kennelly from Lincoln, who works in wood, ceramic and bronze; and Suzanne Crane of Virginia, a functional potter.

Salisbury venue hosts its own 'Last Comic Standing'

Would-be comedians will have an opportunity to test out their material when "La(st) Chiquita Comic Standing" comes to La Chiquita restaurant in Salisbury next week.

The amateur comedy contest will give contestants a venue for their five-minute routines, with a chance to compete for cash and a variety of prizes.
